Direct Indirect Speech

Pengertian Direct Speech (kalimat langsung)
Direct speech (kalimat langsung) merupakan kalimat di mana ucapan dari si pembicara langsung dituliskan dengan apa adanya. Kalimat tersebut ditulis menggunakan tanda baca kutip (“). Tak heran jika kalimat ini juga dikenal sebagai kalimat kutipan. Direct speech (kalimat langsung) dibagi menjadi dua bagian, yaitu: reporting verbs (kata kerja yang melaporkan) serta reported words (kata atau ucapan yang dilaporkan).
Pengertian Indirect Speech (Kalimat tidak langsung)
Indirect Speech (Kalimat tidak langsung) merupakan kalimat yang melaporkan sesuatu dari apa yang diucapkan oleh orang lain. Kalimat ini juga biasa dikenal dengan “reported speech”. Kalimat langsung (direct speech) juga bisa diubah menjadi kalimat tidak langsung (indirect speech) dengan menghilangkan tanda baca kutip (“) dan mengubahnya dengan kata penghubung (conjunction).

Direct Indirect Speech Statements
Direct Speech:
Subject (S) + Reporting Verb (RV) + Direct Speech
Example: She said, “I like this dress”.
Indirect Speech:
Subject (S) + Reporting Verb (RV) + Noun/Pronoun + Indirect Speech
Example: She told Louis that she liked the dress.
Direct Speech → Indirect Speech
Simple Present → Simple Past
Anna said, “The police are troublesome.” → Anna said that the police were troublesome.
Present Continuous → Past Continuous
Ruth said, “Zakeus is cutting the grass while other guys are playing soccer.” → Rust said thatZakeus was cutting the grass while other guys were playing soccer.
Present Perfect → Past Perfect
Daud said, “I have never lied before.” → Daud said that he had never lied before.
Simple Past → Past Perfect
Paul said, “I made it.” → Paul said that he had made it.
Simple Future → Past Future
Thomas said, “My parents will come next month.” → Thomas said that his parents would come in the following month.

Move to Indirect speech (Simple Present → Simple Past)
1) He said, “I buy a bagpack”.
Answer: He said that he bought a bagpack
2) Daddy said, “We work so hard”.
Answer: Daddy said that they worked so hard.
Move to Indirect speech (Present Continuous → Past Continuous)
3) Lydia said, “They are studying Math”.
Answer: Lydia said that they were studying Math.
4) She said, “I am waiting for somone”.
Answer: She said that she was waiting for someone.
Move to Indirect speech (Present Perfect → Past Perfect)
5) Denis said, “I have completed the task”.
Answer: Denis said that he had completed the task.
6) Anggi said, “I have not meet her”.
Answer: Anggi said that he had not meet her.
Move to Indirect speech (Simple Past → Past Perfect)
7) They said, “We went for a walk”.
Answer: They said that they had gone for a walk.
8) He said, “I bought a new car”.
Answer: He said that he had bought a new car.
Move to Indirect speech (Simple Future → Past Future)
9) shanti said, “I will start a new life”.
Answer: shanti said that she would start a new life.
10) They said to me, “We will help you”.
Answer: They said to me that they would help me.
